Day 26 – July 14: Across the Colorado Plateau

Those of you who have experience in this corner of the world will wonder why we chose to take the Albuquerque – Gallup – Shiprock route rather than the traditional Albuquerque – Farmington – Shiprock route. There are a couple of answers.  First, because that’s the route Irma (our car’s GPS) chose for us. Now, we’ve had enough experience with Irma to know that she can’t always be trusted to pick the most efficient way to get from point A to point B, so we could have headed north and trusted that she would eventually catch up to us. But Second, we’d never been this way and thought it might be interesting. And Third, it gave us another couple of hours to follow America’s Main Street – Route 66.

Anyway we eventually made Shiprock

Waved to Shiprock Pentecostal Church,

The church is back from the road, at the center of the picture

Commented on how the power line towers look like Navajo spirits marching across the plain

and drove thru some of the most beautiful scenery this country has to offer

Eventually we arrived in Moab Utah. At this point the scenery gets even more dramatic

Yes, that’s a jeep parked on that bluff

The Colorado river flows thru town

the other reason to hit Moab is because there’s a great rock shop there.  We spent the better part of an hour perusing their collections and adding to their coffers.

This is the front door step to the shop. Even there the history is evident.

Finally arriving in Price (too late to visit the terrific natural history museum) we settled on a Chinese Buffet for dinner. The food was good – standard American-Chinese fare (although they did have pot stickers and sesame balls so Cheryl gave it high marks.  The high point of the meal, though, was the fortune cookies:

Cheryl: “You find beauty in ordinary things. Appreciate this gift.” (See the note above about the rock shop in Moab)

Randy: “Need some adventure and enjoyment? Take a vacation.” (Good thought – better late than never)

Tomorrow, we head for the stables.

Nite all, R
