Day 17 – 6/6/2019 – Nantucket

A guy could get used to this process of starting the day off slowly. It’s certainly a more relaxed way to travel.

We had the opportunity to relax on the deck after breakfast before…

Eventually it was time to leave for the ferry to Nantucket. We opted for the high-speed ferry that made the run in just over an hour rather than the traditional ferry (taking 2:15).

Waiting to board. The kid travels like a Marshall – never without a book to read in spare moments.
Waving to the inbound ferry as we were leaving Hyannis.
The ferry was quite comfortable with comfortable seats and tables for entertaining activities.

We arrived at about noon and walked a bit away from the wharf to find lunch. Kim, consulting Trip Advisor pointed us in the direction of a traditional pub called…

Following Lunch (and a visit to the bookstore next door) we headed to the Whaling Museum. This highly rated museum was certainly worth a visit. Their many displays related to the whaling industry through history were well done and educational. Here are just a couple of examples.

Sperm Whale
Figurehead from the schooner Daniel I. Tenney (1875)
Alaskan whaling kayak
Oil press

They also have recently opened a kids discovery area that occupied both grandsons during our visit.

They had an excellent exhibit of Scrimshaw.

“Whalebones” for a corset
Canes
Pie crimpers
They also had an observation deck with views of the town and harbor
As an added treat the displayed unique sculptures out front.

Following the museum we walked over to the Brandt Point Lighthouse.

Then it was time to get back on the boat. Our stay in Nantucket was short but we enjoyed our time there.

Saying good by to the Bryant Point Lighthouse

Returning to the mainland we settled in for a relaxing afternoon – swimming, beaching, reading on the deck, bicycle riding. This afternoon the wind dropped making the weather much more pleasant. However, that also brought out the “no-see-ums” who proved to be a pain in the — wherever they landed.

The condo complex maintains a fleet of bicycles for guest use.
Sunset on the beach.

After dinner we headed down to our favorite ice cream parlor for a final treat.

Tomorrow we pack up and head to Rhode Island – the last state in our New England adventure.
