Day 11 – 9/14 – Down the coast

Today we headed down the coast from Halifax, stopping first in Peggy’s Cove and then on to Lunenburg.

Peggy’s cove is an iconic fishing village with quaint houses, small harbor, the most frequently photographed lighthouse in Canada, and about 50 tour busses a day (whenever cruise ships are in Halifax – there were three ships there this day).

The place is built on granite outcroppings. No, Cheryl, that one won’t fit in my carry-on.

They even had a piper

Next we continued our excursion to Lunenburg – home port of the Bluenose II.

Actually this is the Bluenose IIb – the first one wrecked somewhere in the Caribbean. This is the second one, but recently it was totally rebuilt.  But don’t mention that to a Nova Scotian.  They’re kind-of touchy.

Anyway, we had lunch

We checked out the port

And we went on a walking tour of the town

How’s this for a school?

They like fancy here.
Local color. It all started with the bright green building on the end.
One of the original “settler’s houses”. In its first incarnation, the house would have extended only as far as the guide’s hand.
Lutheran church

This church was built by boat builders
Martin Luther
Former pub, then a temperance union headquarters, now a B&B – with the bar in operation again

The Anglican church has a copy of a “vinegar Bible”

Following Lunenburg we returned to Halifax.

This evening was the farewell dinner.  We were inducted into the “Order of the Good Time” – an actual honorary order in Nova Scotia that dates back to 1606.  Who Knew? We also said good by to our new friends and fellow travelers (whom we wouldn’t see again until we adjourned to the lounge after dinner, or at breakfast tomorrow).

It’s been a fun, educational, long, relaxing adventure.

Tomorrow we spend on airplanes.

Tonight, we sleep.  Nite all.
