Day 1 – 06/03/2021 – San Diego

Welcome to the “new” world of travel. This is our first airline trip since March 2020 – probably the longest we’ve gone without passing thru the Boise airport in – I don’t know how long. It felt strange but I was almost giddy walking down the familiar old B concourse. Even though we were fully masked up there was a feeling of life struggling to return to normal.

That said, you will notice that there is no “Day 0” post. That’s because there was no flurry of house cleaning the day before departure. No house sitter = no need to clean – either that or we were so focused on trying to remember everything that needed to be packed (How did I get to the point that I’m traveling with 6 USB charged devices?) that we just let cleaning slip.

Anyway we headed off to the airport, cleared security quickly (Thank You TSA Precheck) and headed off to our gate.

This vaca was another milestone in that we were flying Southwest – haven’t done that in a long while either. The flight attendants were, as always, entertaining.

It was a celebratory flight in that they had just increased their beverage menu by 400% (They now have 4 options).

Anyway the flight was comfortable and timely and we arrived in SD, caught the shuttle to our hotel and grabbed lunch at the little storefront Mexican stand that the van driver recommended. Then we took a walk. Being less than a mile from Old Town we headed in that direction. Along the way we were treated to wonderful blossoming trees.

And a few interesting cacti

We wandered around the Old Town State Historical Park – a combination of historic buildings and interesting shops

We also climbed the hill to the Victorian Heritage Park – a cluster of historic buildings from that era gathered in a park-like setting.

Including one of the two oldest synagoggues in California
Note that the LDS church’s “Mormon Battalion Education Center” is across the street from the synagogue.

Back down the hill we crossed the street in front of the Church of the Immaculate Conception

And found a friendly little watering hole to slake our thirst (aka Get Cheryl Drunk).

AKA – Get Cheryl Drunk

We relaxed in the shade of their patio and read until it was time to return to the hotel to meet Kim and family for dinner.

Dinner was delivered pizza and sandwiches

Then it was off to our room to blog, read, and gather energy for tomorrow. Jen and family arrive ~10:00 this evening and tomorrow the activity is the San Diego Zoo! Can’t wait.

BTW, the weather here varies from cool and overcast to clear and very pleasant. Hope it stays this way thru the weekend.

That’s about it for today.

Till tomorrow – TTFN
