Day 4 – 9/23/2019 – Moving Day

Today we left Kanab and headed for Sedona.

There are a couple of ways to get there. We chose the one that took us past Glen Canyon Dam

…and Lake Powell

We stopped for lunch in Tuba City AZ. Tuba City is in the Navajo Nation so we were immediately confused about time (Even though Arizona doesn’t switch to daylight time the Navajo Nation does. On the other hand, if you have a hankerin’ for a hamburger with a fry bread bun, this is the place for you.

Of course you can eat the burger without the bun and enjoy the fry bread on its own. Since that gives you two slices of fry bread you can even share one with your wife, if you’re feeling generous.

After lunch we visited the adjacent museum that had excellent displays about Navajo culture, religion, history, economy, and several types of hogan.

This is a model of a female hogan, made more for living in than for ceremonial or healing rites.

They also had a section about the Code Talkers from WW II. While we were viewing the displays the docent mentioned that one of the 6 living code talkers would be giving a talk this afternoon. Sadly we couldn’t stay for the talk, but as we were leaving he arrived (on the arm of his granddaughter).

Back on the road we drove thru a real gully-washer of a rainstorm for much of the afternoon. We finallly arrived at our hotel, checked in, had time for a short rest, and met our fellow travelers for the “intro and howdy-do” session.

Then it was on to dinner were we sampled a local delicacy…

We also ate excellent salmon with house-made pineapple salsa – but you’ve seen salmon before.

Now we’ve retired to our room to do this, read, and rest up for tomorrow. The tour is structured so that the first couple of days are easy and non-strenuous to give flat landers (many of our group are from the east coast) time to acclimate to the elevation. Apparently we didn’t need to spend all that time hiking at elevation this weekend. Oh, well. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Till then, R
