Off to Iceland, Day 13, 08/15/26 Djúpivogur Iceland

It was an early morning with a 9:15 tour call.
So we were up, breakfasted, and on the tender at the appointed hour.

The excursion was a light-weight bus tour of the town and the area.
Djúpivogur is another town next to a fjord – this time at the mouth rather than deep within.
It sits on the extreme east side of Iceland.

Getting off the tender We boarded our bus and met our guide.
She talked a lot – and it was all good/interesting information.
She also sang for us (very well – she’s a professional singer).

Driving thru town she pointed out three churches.

The beloved Old Church (currently being renovated)

Leaving town our route took us along the edge of the fjord.
Some of the scenery was pretty spectacular.

Layers of volcanic basalt cut by wind and water and glaciers

Our ultimate goal was a waterfall on the Fossá River.

We took some photos and got back on the bus.

*On the way back we noted the salmon farms in the fjord.*

Back in town we drove by their most famous artwork – an installation by Sigurður Guðmundsson called Eggin í Gleðivík – the Eggs at Merry Bay.

There are 34 granite eggs, one for each of species of bird that nests in the area.

Then it was back to the dock, onto the tender, back to the ship, and on to lunch.

After lunch we napped, read, and did some work until the 4:30 port talk.

This next port looks interesting. Should be fun.

*The Westman Islands are a small archipelago off the south coast.* *Cross your fingers, we might see puffins.*

The final lecture of the day was

He did, however, cover volcanism around the world

*He covered Plate Tectonics* and the role of plate movement in volcano development.

After dinner it was time for the Farewell reception.
We toasted the Captain and crew, paying particular attention to those departments that we don’t normally see, but are vital to ship operations.
This was followed by a musical production by our vocal quartet. It’s the first time we’ve gone to one of their shows this cruise and they were as well balanced and talented as you’d expect.
I’m gonna have to figure out how to do less blogging and more going to shows. Maybe next year.

Then it was back to the room to write this up and get ready for tomorrow.

Tomorrow is also packing day. Our suitcases have to be out in the hall by 10:00 tomorrow evening.
Should be a busy day.
