Day 3 – 3/8/2020 – A Three Hour Tour

The first scheduled event of the day wasn’t until 9:30 so we had time to sleep in a bit before hitting the gym.

Exercise complete we stopped by the “corner treat store” for breakfast (a cookie for Cheryl, a Chocolate Croissant for me). Then it was back to the room for a quick shower, dressing, and packing the backpacks for the day.

We met the van driver who whisked us off to the dock where we met our boat…

Nice little motorboat
And our captain
And our bartender
And our escort bird

Eventually we got under way for the choppy ride over to Isla Mujeres (the “Island of women“ – so named because when Cortez landed all the men were out fishing so the only people he saw were women and children).

We skirted the island for a bit.

The quaint structures are obviously modern copies
Many of the hotels are obviously less modern originals.
Main dock. Note the people in the water to the left.
Most of them are people. Some are dolphins.

Eventually the captain found a calm piece of water not too close to civilization and the crew brought out a tray of chips, fresh-made salsa (with and without shrimp), fresh-made guacamole, and whole shrimp swimming in home-made shrimp sauce. (Did I mention they had a chef on board?) Not realizing what was to come I neglected to get a photo of that feast.

When the platter of coconut shrimp arrived I was a bit more on the ball.

The coconut shrimp was followed by cubes of salmon marinated in great spices and cooked with mango. Exquisit!

Then came lunch. We groaned!
But we still ate dessert. That’s cheesecake on a graham cracker cookie.

After a bit of recovery they brought out the floats and several of us spent some time in the (warmer than the pools at the resort) water.

Eventually it was time to head back. We said our good by’s to our great crew…

And headed back to the resort to nap and read. In the fullness of time it was time to meet the crew and head to dinner. Tonight was the Teppanyaki steak house at the resort.

The chef was excellent
He even made a heart out of the fried rice – and then made the heart beat.

Of course we were still full from the boat ride so we ate very lightly but we enjoyed the show nonetheless.

Dinner was followed by a leisurely walk down the sidewalk along the beach back to our rooms. (The resort is spread out over a mile along the shore and the restaurant was at the far end from our building.)

This required restorative sustenance once we got back. So we stopped by the ”corner treat store“ for cookies (Cheryl and me) and ice cream (everyone else). Note, dessert with dinner had ice cream so I have not suddenly lost my love of the flavorful frozen treat.

Then it was back to our room to prepare for the morrow and off to bed. We leave early for our excursion to Chichen Itza. So it’s back on the road delving into history, archaeology, anthropology, and other “y-words” that we didn’t pay attention to until recently.

Wish us luck.

    1. Comment 1: Actually what I showed you was just the backup supply. That’s in addition to the fully stocked liquor/wine cabinet.

    2. Comment 4: you might want to skip Day 5 and go directly to Day 6. Just sayin’.
