Day 6 – 9/25/2019 – Out and About

Our first destination this morning was Montezuma’s Castle, a cliff dwelling south of Sedona.

The feature actually had nothing to do with Montezuma (duh!) but the early settlers seemed to know only one Indian name-at least that’s the story.

Our guide/trail boss/general factotum, Gael and Paul, the driver of the other van, gave us an orientation to the site, discussing the culture of the builders, their farming methods, and theories of why they built structures such as these.

Then it was back on the vans to head to the Yavapai-Apache Cultural Center. This small museum is a work in progress but does a reasonable job of telling the history of how the two tribes were allotted adjoining reservation land

…and then marched 180 miles south to a camp near Phoenix. After 25 years (in 1900) they were allowed to return and have been working to regain their place in the region.

The next stop was lunch at a nearby Mexican restaurant.

The afternoon event was a jeep tour.

We eventually made it back to civilization and enjoyed recounting our adventure over dinner. Following dinner we enjoyed a short concert/presentation/history lecture/poetry reading by local musicians and historians Ken and Lynne Mikell.

So that’s the day. I leave you with a few photos from the Jeep tour.
