Day 4 – 2/20 – Literature and Music

First of all, we’re fine. We got back to our room really late this evening so I’m still downloading pictures.  I’ll add them later, along with more of an account of our day’s activities.  Until then, here’s the outline: Breakfast – Check Lecture on Literature related to New Orleans – how the city shaped the […]

Day 3 – 2/19 – History and Katrina

After breakfast we gathered in the conference room where our coordinator, Mary Lyn, gave us marching orders for the day. Then she turned the time over to Brian Altobello who walked us thru 300 years of New Orleans history in 2 hours.   Along the way he dealt with the standard stuff (the French who

Day 2b – 2/18 – Mardi Gras World

Mardi Gras World is a warehouse down by the river that is the base of operations (and storage) for the family business that builds the floats (and hosts many of the parties) for Krewes that put on parades during Carnival season. The basics: Carnival season runs from Epiphany to Fat Tuesday.  We generally think of

Day 2 – 2/18 – Around about town

The first “official” function today was “check-in” with the local Road Scholar coordinator at 4:00 this afternoon.  That left much of the day “free” for us to explore. We started the day by, well, not starting the day.  We slept in.  However, we did get up and out the door in time to walk 3

Day 1 – 2/17 – On the Road Again

Day 5 – 1/29 – Around Town

The day began with a trip to the mall. Probably not the most exciting thing we could have done today, but Cheryl and Billie both decided that they needed to do some shopping.  I tagged along a) to drive; and 2) to spend the time mall-walking.  We were all successful in our efforts. Following lunch

Day 3 – 1/27 – Huntington Day 1

Fools that we were, we thought we could do the Huntington Library in 1 day. Following breakfast (and a discussion with Arlene about the tattoo convention currently being held at the Pasadena convention center) we picked up Billie (Steve was stoved-up from our day yesterday) and headed to the Huntington Library. The “library” is a

Day 2 – 1/26 – Ashes and Tar Pits

We arose, breakfasted at the hotel (where we met Arlene; Not your typical Best Western Breakfast person Arlene is friendly, chatty, attentive, and interested in “her people”.) and headed over to the house. At the appointed hour we departed in caravan for the Las Angeles National Cemetery (the military cemetery where Billie’s father is buried).
