Day 17 – 1/28/2020 – Homeward Bound

Up early, packed, breakfasted, and on the bus by 7:30. We checked bags and cleared security and had time to sit at the gate and wonder why we weren’t still asleep. The first stop was Istanbul. We had a long enough layover that we had time to take a few photos of their fancy new […]

Day 16 – 1/27/2020 – Philippi

Buckle Up Buttercup, this is our last day in Greece. This morning we headed to Philippi – the first town the Apostle Paul visited in Europe. As we left town we caught sight of the ”mausoleum of Galarius.” Once we were on the road the trip to Philippi took almost 2 hours so Dr. Smith

Day 15 – 1/26/2020 – Meteora

First, a photo I neglected to include yesterday. It seems wherever we go on this trip we see, at the edge of our sight, snow capped peaks. It’s a reminder that there are tall mountains in Greece, and that it’s winter here. Now on to today. After breakfast we took the short trip across town

Today will be bracketed by sun photos. Here’s the sunrise over breakfast this morning: Shortly after this was taken we boarded the bus and left Olympia headed for Delphi. Along the way we crossed the bridge over the Corinth Bay. An engineering marvel the bridge is almost 2 miles long and is one of the

Day 12 – 1/23/2020 – Olympia

We photo’d the sunrise, finished breakfast and set out – on foot because Olympia is so small – to the original Olympic village. Michaela told us a bunch of stories today, some Greek myth and some Olympic history. She described this as the location for the original Olympics because of the Fertility of the valley,

Day 11 – 1/22/2020 – Road to Olympia

Today was designated as a “road day.” That is, the major event for today was a transfer across the peninsula to the village of Olympia. This was scheduled to be a really short day so we started with a walking tour of the old town Nafplion. Tour complete we climbed aboard the bus for one

Day 10 – 1/21/2020 – Mycenae

If you’ve read (and/or remember) the Iliad you recall that the people attacking Troy were “Greeks” from Mycenae. Today we visited their main city/fortress. We did other stuff too, but we’ll get to that later. After ooing and ahhing over the tomb we proceeded to the site’s museum. They’ve got a good collection of artifacts

Day 8 – 1/19/2020 – Around Athens

Up, breakfast, NOT on the bus. Rather we walked a few blocks up to the presidential residence to see the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. This being Sunday they are decked out in the distinctively Greek uniform. Next we boarded the bus for a driving tour of the city.
