Off to Iceland, Day 2, 08/04/26 All At Sea

Being a sea day we had a bit more wiggleroom in our schedule,
But not so much as we’d actually get to sleep in.
So at 7:00 we were up and on to exercising: Cheryl to the treadmill in the fitness center…

Four miles later I returned, invigorated, just as Cheryl returned from the gym.
We hurried to complete ablutions and headed up to Mamsen’s for…

We lingered over exquisite pastry goodness and hot beverages until it was time to wander down to the theatre for the first lecture of the day

The format of the lecture was a little weird.

He covered the factors that make a seabird’s life unique: keeping dry, moderating temperature, finding food, hunting practices, dealith with salt water, mating and nesting habits. It was interesting and we did learn a few things.

Back at the stateroom Cheryl napped while I stretched out on the veranda and read.
We figured out that yesterday (when we slept until 10:00 (8:00 on our bodies) we really didn’t do anything to address jet lag. So today we were still dealing with it. So Cheryl took a long nap and I took several short ones while reading.

I rousted her when it was time for lunch.

Then it was on to the second lecture:

Sadly, after this lecture there wasn’t time to eat lunch and get back to the theatre for Trivia so we skipped that, lingered over lunch, chatted with our server Lihua (from China), and headed back to the stateroom for another session of reading on the veranda before the Port Talk for tomorrow when we’re in Halifax.

6:30 saw us back in the theatre for the first Russell Lee story of the trip:

He talked about the book, author, and film.
He spent most of the time talking about Steven Spielberg, his directorial decisions, and how he managed to overcome significant technical “opportunities” to make one of the most successful films of all time.
He demonstrated how John Wiliams’ score added to the mood of the scenes and how Spielberg’s color choices played into the overall action.
Finally he demonstrated how Spielberg borrowed from Hitchcock to heighten the drama.
For instance, in a 2+ feature film about a shark, the shark only appears for 4 minutes.
It’s truly a masterful piece of work.

After dinner it was time for the Captain’s welcome celebration.
They passed out champaign, the Cruise Director spoke, the Captain welcomed us and introduced us to his senior staff, they introduced the lecturers, and we were entertained by the musical talent

Viking doesn’t do Broadway style shows. Rather a quartet perform programs based on musical themes.
Tomorrow’s show is “Southern Sounds” covering works by various Country & Western artists.
We’ll give that one a miss.

So that’s Day 2, a pretty typical sea day for us.

Tomorrow is a port day and our first excursion doesn’t leave until 11:00
So it could be a slow start again in the morning.
We’ll see how the jet lag is faring.
