Off to Iceland, Day -1, 08/01/26 LIST DAY!

It’s a day of lists!

  • Final roundup of this & that;
  • Adjustments to packing based on latest weather info;
  • Make sure that all the electronics are charged up;
  • Reviewing everything involved in shutting down the house;
  • Checking today’s menu plan so that we don’t leave any surprises in the fridge for our return;
  • Run-thru of everything that needs to happen to get us onto the airplane;
  • Review this list to make sure I’ve covered all the categories.

Oh, and the normal stuff that happens on the first of a month.

First, a bit about the trip.
Tomorrow we fly to New York (with a short layover in Portland)
We’re booked into a hotel near the port. It’s on the edge of Hell’s Kitchen so we might get to do a bit of wandering in the evening or Monday morning (depending on the weather – this could be the worst weather we see on the whole trip).
Monday afternoon we board the Viking Vela.
After a sea day on Tuesday,
Wednesday finds us in Halifax Nova Scotia
Then it’s on to L’anse aux Meadows (site of the first European settlement in the new world)
From there we cruise to Greenland. In the two stops there we’ll get a taste of Greenland history and culture.
Next is Iceland with 6 stops in a circuit of the island.
Last we’ve added a Viking extension that gives us a day in Bergen, a train ride over the top and into Oslo for a day and on to the next part of our adventure – a brief visit with the Schelds in Hamburg.

So that’s what we’re up to the next couple of weeks.
Thunderbumpers in New York, a bit of frigid in Greenland, dramatic whatever in Iceland, and (assuming the weather cooperates) possibly the most dramatic train ride ever.

I’ll keep you posted.

Till then,
R
